Concrete, pavers, and tiles are popular choices for outdoor surfaces due to their durability, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness in the last 30 – 50 years.
Many properties in Melbourne, especially those built since the 1960s, feature outdoor areas like patios, verandas and porches made from these materials and often in combination.
Given the increasing demand to refresh older outdoor areas to align with modern interior design, we at Superdeck have received many inquiries about installing composite decking over the existing concrete, pavers, or tiles. To assist you with your decking project, we’ve compiled a step-by-step guide.
So, can you install composite decking over concrete? Yes, but with a few considerations. Composite decks cannot be directly installed on a solid surface; it requires a framework underneath.
Make sure there is proper drainage beneath your deck to prevent water pooling. We recommend a minimum ground clearance of 40mm with adequate drainage, or 90mm without.
Height is crucial for a seamless finish. You want your deck to align with existing door thresholds without creating awkward steps when you step out of the door.
Most homes have sufficient space between door frames and the ground for framing and decking. Plan your deck size and layout accordingly.
Build your frame using timber or steel, ensuring joists are spaced no more than 450mm apart.
Level your frame meticulously using a spirit level and packers to ensure stability.
Utilise the natural slope of concrete or tiles for water runoff by propping your frame on packers.
Anchor your subframe to the concrete using dynabolts and steel brackets for secure installation.
Fasten the frame securely to the brackets using appropriate fasteners.
Consider anchoring the frame to the house for additional stability by drilling directly into the brickwork.
Once your frame is installed and anchored, confidently install your composite decking for a fresh, rejuvenated outdoor space.
