Front Yard Makeover in South East Melbourne

Introduction

This South East Melbourne project transformed a tired, high-maintenance front garden into a clean and modern frontage. Superdeck worked together with J Plus Landscaping to deliver a low-maintenance solution that suits the home’s contemporary grey and white façade.

The original front yard was covered in mulch and scattered sandstone boulders. Sitting on a corner block beneath large gum trees, it constantly collected leaf litter and never quite looked finished. The homeowners wanted a neat, structured garden with real kerb appeal, without the ongoing upkeep.

Design and Execution

The old mulch and rocks were cleared, and the yard was rebuilt as a raised, level garden. Superdeck supplied composite decking boards in a grey woodgrain finish. Rather than laying them as a deck, J Plus Landscaping stacked the boards horizontally to form a tiered garden wall around the full perimeter of the block, neatly following the angle of the corner footpath.

The upper level features a generous area of synthetic grass, creating a vibrant green centrepiece that stays lush all year round. A lower tiered garden bed sits in front, finished with warm-toned pebbles and low-water plants to add colour and soften the clean lines of the boards.

Composite decking was chosen for its durability, weather resistance and low maintenance. Unlike timber sleepers, it will not rot, warp or need repainting, making it ideal for garden walls exposed to soil and moisture.

Results

The finished front yard is sharp, modern and perfectly suited to the home. The layered design gives the property real depth from the street, while the grey boards tie in seamlessly with the façade and garage door.

The space now looks polished year round and requires minimal maintenance. There is no mowing, no re-mulching and no painting, just a quick sweep or hose down to keep it looking fresh.

Conclusion

This South East Melbourne project shows that composite decking is not just for decks. Used as a tiered garden edge, it creates a clean, durable frame for the entire front yard. Through the partnership between Superdeck and J Plus Landscaping, this family now enjoys a stylish, low-maintenance frontage that adds lasting value to their home.

The front garden used to look messy, especially with all the leaves from the gum trees. The new garden wall and artificial grass have made it look much tidier, and we love how the grey cladding matches the house.
